What Keeps Us Together

Curious to know what anchors a Christian couple?

Seeing as it’s Valentine’s Day, we asked two Scarfie students how knowing God shapes their marriage two years on from tying the knot…

Garth: “I like to think of Jesus as the anchor of our relationship. Kachina and I are two boats kept close by one anchor. Without the anchor on a calm day we would be fine and won’t drift apart, but in stormy conditions this anchor is what keeps us together.

For example, in 2019 Kach’s Dad died of a sudden heart attack. Instead of relying on each other when we were both raw with emotion, we could rely and depend on Jesus. This enabled me to support and love Kach better than I could on my own. Jesus is constant and unchanging even when we are.

Kachina is the second best thing to happen to me, the best being finding a deep personal relationship with Jesus that I began at uni. He helps me love her more than I could on my own strength.”

Kachina: “As my relationship with Garth has grown, I find it easier and easier to depend on him. However, it’s impossible for us to satisfy all of each other’s wants and needs.

As much as I enjoy Garth’s company and feel validated by him, I’m not going to him to find happiness or my sense of worth. I get those from my relationship with Jesus.

I don’t feel like I need to be the “perfect wife” or constantly question if Garth really loves me or not. Knowing that I am loved completely by God frees me up to better love Garth and experience the love he has for me.”
